Lawyer from Alabama enters guilty plea for harassing domestic violence accuser

An attorney from north Alabama has admitted to harassing an individual who accused his client of domestic violence.

John Totten, aged 50, has been found guilty of Harassment, a Class C misdemeanor, as stated in a news release from Attorney General Steve Marshall’s office.

Totten represented a defendant who was facing charges of domestic violence. Before a court hearing, he met with the victim and the defendant and advised the victim to wait in his office.

Later, at the courthouse, Totten verbally confronted the victim and ordered her to leave, instilling fear in her and making her reluctant to return.

According to Attorney General Steve Marshall, individuals who have experienced domestic violence should not have to worry about being harassed by the attorneys representing their abusers. He emphasizes that attorneys have a responsibility to uphold the highest moral and ethical standards as they fulfill their roles within the judicial system. Any attorney who breaches these standards will be subject to criminal prosecution in accordance with the law.

Totten pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor and was subsequently sentenced as per the plea agreement. The sentence included a 90-day jail term, which was suspended, and a requirement to serve one year of probation.
