Alabama prison warden and spouse indicted on drug charges

The Alabama Department of Corrections has reported that the warden of Limestone Correctional Facility and his wife have been apprehended and are now facing drug charges.

Warden Chadwick Crabtree and Melissa Crabtree were taken into custody at their residence on Friday by the ADOC’s Law Enforcement Services Division, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency SWAT team, and the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office. The arrest was made in connection with multiple bench warrants.

Chadwick Crabtree and Melissa Crabtree have been charged with multiple offenses including second-degree unlawful possession of marijuana, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, manufacturing of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Following their arrest, they were transported to the Limestone County Jail.

According to court documents, Chadwick Crabtree was arrested on September 1, 2022, in Limestone County. The arrest is related to his involvement in the production of psilocybin mushrooms, which are a type of psychedelic mushroom.

The ADOC has placed Chadwick Crabtree on Mandatory Leave without pay pending further personnel action.

Chadwick Crabtree, a native of Elkmont, has dedicated over 20 years of his career to the ADOC. As per the ADOC’s website, he has held the position of warden at the Birmingham Community Based Facility for women inmates. On the ADOC’s website, he is recognized as a “Warden III,” which signifies the highest rank an officer can attain at a prison.

The ADOC conducted a search of Chadwick Crabtree’s office at the correctional facility as part of their ongoing investigation. They have stated that there may be additional charges in the future.
