Conan O’Brien Praises Norm Macdonald’s Genius Comedy on O.J. Simpson During His Time on ‘SNL’ Amid Network Ties to O.J.

Conan O’Brien made an appearance on CNN to have an interview with Jake Tapper shortly after the news of O.J. Simpson’s demise surfaced. As he promoted his new Max series “Conan O’Brien Must Go,” the comedian and former late-night host humorously mentioned that he never jokes about someone on the day of their passing. However, O’Brien did take a moment to reminisce about the era when late-night shows had to address O.J. Simpson’s murder trial.

According to O’Brien, Norm Macdonald was a significant figure in the comedy world. O’Brien fondly remembers Macdonald as one of his best guests of all time and one of the greatest comedians of all time. He believes that Macdonald’s comedy during that period was exceptionally brilliant.

Tapper highlighted the reports suggesting that Macdonald was dismissed from his role as a cast member on “Saturday Night Live” due to his consistent targeting and mocking of Simpson during his hosting of “Weekend Update.” Macdonald’s jokes always centered around the premise that Simpson was guilty of murder. Don Ohlmeyer, the president of NBC at the time, was a friend of Simpson’s and purportedly cautioned Macdonald to refrain from making jokes at Simpson’s expense.

O’Brien jokingly mentioned that the head of the network had a close relationship with O.J. Simpson when discussing Macdonald’s dismissal, but added that it was now a thing of the past.

“That was an incredibly significant moment in our country’s history,” reflected O’Brien passionately. “It was a monumental event that prompted us to pause and reflect on our racial journey, to assess the progress we have made. Truly, it was a pivotal moment, a turning point that marked a new era.”

During his press tour for the Max series, O’Brien also made an appearance on the YouTube interview series “Hot Ones.” In a light-hearted manner, he playfully mocked Warner Bros. Discovery for the frequent name changes of its streaming service. From HBO Go to HBO Max, and now simply Max, the constant rebranding amused O’Brien.

Conan O’Brien jokingly expressed his confusion about the name change from HBO to HBO Max. He playfully questioned whether it should be called HBO Max or just Max. O’Brien humorously remarked that the name change to Max was not necessarily an improvement, as it doesn’t quite roll off the tongue. Despite the name change, O’Brien emphasized that his show remains funny, regardless of the platform it airs on.
