Late last week, the former president and Nobel Peace Prize-winning humanitarian celebrated another year as the longest-lived ex-commander in chief. He has held this record since March 2019.
In February 2023, he started receiving hospice care. Surprisingly, he celebrated his 99th birthday in October, which amazed his loved ones, according to his grandson Jason Carter.
Jason Carter expressed his gratitude for the valuable time he and others had the privilege to spend with him, stating, “It’s truly a blessing for all of us.”
According to Jason Carter, the time his grandfather spent in the private sector and his work at The Carter Center played a significant role in shaping his legacy. He dedicated his life to advocating for and empowering marginalized and impoverished individuals worldwide. Carter firmly believed in their capacity to transform their own lives and the importance of human rights and democracy for them. Jason Carter, who is a former state senator and gubernatorial candidate, expressed these sentiments during an interview with ABC News.
According to his grandson, Jimmy Carter’s time in hospice came as a surprise.
“When the former president reached the one-year mark of receiving care, Jason Carter, in an interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, expressed his surprise. He stated, ‘We had initially believed that he only had a few days left.'”
Jason Carter previously revealed to ABC News that his father, Jimmy Carter, found solace and strength in his unwavering love for his late wife, Rosalynn Carter. Throughout their 74 years of marriage, their deep bond was a source of support and motivation for the former president.
According to his grandson, Jimmy Carter’s Christian faith has been a significant influence in his life, shaping his identity and values. He emphasized that this faith story is deeply ingrained in Carter’s character.
Jason Carter expressed a similar sentiment when he spoke with the Journal-Constitution: “He is embracing this phase of his life as a continuation of the faith journey he has been on all his life. We are all here to support him on this journey.”
Jimmy Carter, after dedicating years to public service, including a military career, political endeavors, and philanthropy, finally stepped back from the spotlight in the past year. Throughout his life, he tirelessly utilized his time and energy to make a positive impact on the world.
In 2002, when he was awarded the Nobel Prize, the committee recognized his tireless dedication to seeking peaceful resolutions to global conflicts, advocating for democracy and human rights, and fostering economic and social progress.
At the time, Jimmy Carter was 78 years old and showed no signs of slowing down, despite the obstacles he faced, including his declining health.
“It’s not easy to make it to 95 years old,” he expressed in a 2019 interview with People magazine in Nashville, Tennessee. During that time, he and his wife were actively involved in constructing over 4,000 homes with Habitat for Humanity.
Jimmy Carter, speaking on the teachings of Jesus, emphasized the importance of using one’s talents for the betterment of others. He affectionately referred to his wife, Rosa, acknowledging their shared commitment to this principle.
