Jeff Bridges is returning to the grid once again.
In an interview with the Film Comment podcast, the 74-year-old actor disclosed that he will be making an appearance in “Tron: Ares,” the third installment of the beloved sci-fi franchise. Bridges first introduced audiences to the world of “Tron” in 1982 and reprised his role in “Tron: Legacy” in 2010. The upcoming film will feature Jared Leto as the lead character Ares, with Joachim Rønning at the helm as director. The script for “Tron: Ares” is penned by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne.
“I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be joining the cast of the highly anticipated third installment of the ‘Tron’ series,” Bridges revealed. “I’ll be working alongside the talented Jared Leto, who is the star of this film. I have always admired his exceptional work.” (When contacted by Variety, Bridges’ representative confirmed that the actor had recorded this podcast interview some time ago, and has since completed his role in ‘Tron: Ares.’)
“Tron” became famous for its groundbreaking use of computer generated imagery (CGI) to bring to life the digital world of a video game. In the film, Kevin Flynn, played by Bridges, gets transported into this virtual realm. In the sequel, Flynn finds himself trapped in a more advanced version of the game, created by his own digital doppelgänger, Clu, also portrayed by Bridges through the use of CGI technology to digitally de-age the actor.
“I wasn’t too fond of how I appeared in it,” Bridges expressed. “I had this feeling that I resembled Bill Maher more than my true self. It was quite peculiar.”
Jeff Bridges mentioned that he had heard about the reduction in the use of AI elements in “Tron: Ares” and the increased utilization of practical sets for the production. He expressed his excitement about the beautiful sets he had witnessed and stated that he is looking forward to seeing the final outcome.
The actor did not provide any additional information about his character in “Tron: Ares,” and it is not certain if he will be playing Kevin Flynn. In the conclusion of “Tron: Legacy,” Flynn absorbs Clu and erases both of them from the virtual world, enabling Sam (Garrett Hedlund), Flynn’s son, and Quorra (Olivia Wilde), a self-aware digital being, to return to the real world.
Hedlund and Wilde will not be joining the cast of “Tron: Ares.” The focus of the film will be on Leto’s character, a digital program that ventures into the human world. The movie also features Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Gillian Anderson, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Sarah Desjardins.
In 2017, Leto initially agreed to take on the lead role and produce the project. However, it wasn’t until January 2023 that Rønning joined as the director. Apart from Leto and Rønning, Justin Springer, Jeffrey Silver, and Emma Ludbrook are also involved as producers.
