According to officials from the police department and the court, a shooting incident on Thursday resulted in the tragic deaths of an Independence police officer and a court worker. Additionally, two other officers were injured during the incident.

The tragic incident took place at a residence in northeastern Independence, specifically on the 1100 block of North Elsea Smith Road. Cpl. Justin Ewing, a spokesperson for the Missouri State Highway Patrol, stated that it occurred near East Bundschu Road shortly after 1 p.m.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, the victims were transported to Centerpoint Medical Center, with two of them being in critical condition.

According to a news release from the Jackson County Circuit Court, it was confirmed that Mack was shot by an individual inside the home while undergoing an eviction process.

Presiding Judge Jalilah Otto expressed deep sorrow over the incident where a court employee, who serves the public, was shot while carrying out their duties. The judge conveyed heartfelt condolences to the injured employee, the entire Court family, and the Independence Police Department.
