Republican lawmakers urge Schumer to reconvene Senate for immediate Mayorkas impeachment trial

House Republicans have successfully gathered enough votes to impeach Mayorkas in their second attempt.

Some Senate Republicans are calling for an immediate reconvening of the upper chamber to proceed with the impeachment trial of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. They are concerned about his handling of the ongoing migrant crisis at the southern border. The House recently voted to impeach Mayorkas in a close 214-213 vote.

Alejandro Mayorkas made history as the first Cabinet secretary to be impeached by the U.S. Congress since 1876.

In a post on X Tuesday night, Senator Josh Hawley, a Republican from Missouri, urged Schumer to reconvene the Senate promptly and move forward with the trial.

Fox News Digital contacted Schumer’s office for comment, but as of the time of publication, no response was received. However, Schumer stated on Tuesday night, following the vote, that the impeachment trial will commence later this month. The Senate is set to reconvene from recess on February 26.

In a statement, Schumer announced that the House impeachment managers will present the articles of impeachment to the Senate after the state work period. He also mentioned that senators will be sworn in as jurors for the trial the following day.

Senator Josh Hawley expresses his thoughts on Secretary Mayorkas following the House vote on Tuesday.

According to Sen. Mike Lee, a Republican from Utah, it is imperative for the Senate to fulfill its constitutional obligation and proceed with an impeachment trial for Secretary Mayorkas. Lee asserts that Mayorkas has neglected his responsibility to safeguard our nation, and therefore, the Senate cannot afford to falter in this matter.

According to the statement, the author expressed concern over Chuck Schumer’s attempt to downplay the issue and disregard the constitution by opting out of a trial. The author urged Republican leadership to take action and not remain passive in the face of this situation.

Sen. Rick Scott, a Republican from Florida, is urging the Senate to act swiftly on the matter, emphasizing the need for immediate action: “The Senate must address this issue without delay.”

In a recent statement, he expressed his satisfaction with the House Republicans for taking a stand and holding the lawless administration accountable. He pointed out that while some in the Senate focused on securing Ukraine’s border before our own, it is essential to prioritize our own border security.

According to Sen. Eric Schmitt, a Republican from Missouri, there is a stark contrast between the way Democrats handled Trump’s impeachment trials and how they are treating the cabinet member responsible for overseeing the influx of 9 million illegal migrants at the southern border.

“They have absolutely no interest in demanding genuine accountability,” Schmitt remarked. “The impeachment process being brought to the Senate will undoubtedly reveal the lack of seriousness on the part of Democrats when it comes to responsibly leading the nation and safeguarding Americans. The impeachment proceedings against Mayorkas should be swiftly brought to the Senate floor, but it is unlikely that any significant changes will occur at the border while Democrats are in power.”

Several Senate Republicans who opposed the failed border bill in the national security supplemental package share Schmitt’s sentiments. They have expressed concerns about the potential increase in power for President Biden and Mayorkas. These senators argue that transferring asylum claim responsibilities to the secretary of Homeland Security undermines the immigration court processes.

Here are the three House Republicans who thwarted Mayorkas’ impeachment vote.

In the end, the Senate decided to eliminate the text related to the border bill and instead approved a separate foreign aid bill worth $95 billion.

“I believe that it never made sense to many Americans that we’re negotiating a border deal with the person we’re trying to impeach,” expressed Senator Roger Marshall, a Republican from Kansas, in an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital prior to the vote on Tuesday.

“I embrace the impeachment,” Marshall declared. “He failed to uphold the law of the land and betrayed his oath to the American people. Therefore, I believe he should face impeachment.”

On Tuesday evening, House Republicans made their second attempt to impeach Mayorkas. They focused on the ongoing migrant crisis at the U.S. southern border, accusing him of deliberately disregarding existing immigration law and exacerbating the situation.

Over 40 lawmakers have signed a brief showing their support for Texas in its immigration fight with the Biden administration. This demonstrates a growing concern among elected officials regarding the handling of immigration policies at the federal level. The brief highlights the need for a strong and secure border, as well as the importance of enforcing immigration laws to protect national security and public safety. These lawmakers are standing with Texas and advocating for a more effective approach to immigration that prioritizes the rule of law.

Fox News Digital has contacted the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to obtain their comment on the matter. Mia Ehrenberg, a spokesperson for the DHS, issued a statement in response to the House’s vote. She expressed disappointment, stating that House Republicans would be remembered for prioritizing political gain over addressing the critical issues at the border. Ehrenberg highlighted that Secretary Mayorkas had been actively collaborating with Senators from both the Republican and Democratic parties to develop bipartisan solutions for enhancing border security and securing necessary resources for enforcement. She further criticized House Republicans for wasting valuable time on an impeachment that lacked merit and was deemed unconstitutional.

“House Republicans have baselessly accused a committed public servant, who has served our country and upheld the law for over two decades, without any credible evidence or valid Constitutional reasons. Despite facing opposition from both sides of the aisle, Secretary Mayorkas and the Department of Homeland Security remain steadfast in their mission to ensure the safety of the American people,” Ehrenberg emphasized.
