M. Night Shyamalan Casts Josh Hartnett as a Serial Killer in New Thriller ‘Trap’ Trailer at a Pop Star’s Concert

Warner Bros. has unveiled the trailer for the upcoming mystery thriller film “Trap,” directed by M. Night Shyamalan. The movie features a talented cast including Josh Hartnett, Saleka Shyamalan, Hayley Mills, and Marnie McPhail.

Sam Mercer, a producer known for his work on M. Night Shyamalan movies and his role as an executive at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), has passed away at the age of 69.

“Trap” tells the story of a father and his teenage daughter who find themselves at a pop concert that quickly turns into a dark and sinister event. The film’s first glimpse was showcased at this year’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

In the trailer, Hartnett’s character and his daughter, Jody, attend a concert by pop star Lady Raven. As Hartnett excuses himself to use the bathroom, he notices a significant police presence at the event. It becomes evident that they are searching for a serial killer. The shocking twist is that Hartnett’s character is the very killer they are after. A glimpse at his phone reveals that he is currently holding a victim hostage. The trailer concludes with Hartnett, consumed by madness, laughing to himself.

The upcoming movie, “Trap,” was recently showcased at CinemaCon. However, it was also teased at an event in Los Angeles called “The Summer of Shyamalan.” At this event, renowned filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan discussed not only “Trap” but also another project he produced called “The Watchers.” Interestingly, “The Watchers” is directed by Shyamalan’s daughter, Ishana Night Shyamalan. In “Trap,” the role of the pop star is played by the director’s other daughter, Saleka. Notably, Saleka is not only an actress but also a singer-songwriter who contributed several songs to the film.

When talking about his motivation behind making “Trap,” Shyamalan mentioned that he was drawn to the idea of telling the story from the perspective of an unexpected character, in this case, Hartnett’s killer. This approach allowed him to infuse the film with a dark sense of humor, much like his previous works such as “Servant,” “The Visit,” and “Split.” Shyamalan has fully embraced this tone and aims to create an enjoyable experience for the audience, even in moments where they should be terrified, finding themselves laughing instead.

Shyamalan also discussed the process of casting Hartnett, who recently made a comeback with roles in “Black Mirror” and “Oppenheimer.” Shyamalan emphasized his unconventional approach to filmmaking, preferring to work in a “small, reasonable” manner. He explained that he looks for actors who are willing to fully immerse themselves in the film, letting go completely and taking risks. According to Shyamalan, this requires finding the right actor at the right moment in their life, and that’s where Josh Hartnett was when they met. Shyamalan added, “It was just a feeling of the right person at the right time. I had such a wonderful experience working with him.”

The highly anticipated film “Trap” is scheduled to release on August 9th. You can catch a glimpse of the thrilling action in the “Trap” trailer below.
