Indiana state trooper released from hospital after being hit by SUV on I-65

Indiana State Police trooper Azariah Keith returned to his residence on Monday night.

After being struck by an SUV on the I-65 southbound while assisting a driver with a tire change, he was hospitalized at Eskenazi Hospital for over two weeks. According to state police, he sustained severe injuries during the incident.

At approximately 8:45 p.m. on January 20th, Keith was flagged down to assist a pedestrian who needed help changing a flat tire on the left side of I-65 southbound near 30th Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street. Another trooper arrived to block off the left lane and manage traffic. It took Keith approximately thirty minutes to successfully change the tire and provide the necessary assistance.

While he was in the process of stowing away his equipment into the trunk, a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox swiftly approached the area with great velocity. State Police, in a statement issued on January 21, revealed that the Equinox “skillfully maneuvered around the trooper who was positioned to block the left lane, but unfortunately lost control and collided with the concrete median, ultimately hitting both Keith and his police car.”

Trooper Keith’s personal items were assisted by state troopers on Monday as he was wheeled out of the hospital.

Keith eagerly anticipates reuniting with his wife and two young children as he yearns to return home.

The state police have reported that he faces a challenging road to recovery but maintains a positive outlook and a high level of optimism.

22-year-old Armaandeep Singh of Indianapolis, the driver of the Equinox, is facing charges in Marion Superior Court 21. He has been charged with two felony counts of OWI causing serious bodily injury and a misdemeanor count of reckless driving causing bodily injury. Singh’s next court hearing is scheduled for April 16.
