Georgia may be holding onto your cash… And you may not even recognize it

Billions of dollars of lost money belonging to Georgians are waiting to be claimed, and it’s not a scam or a trick.

Our investigative team, led by Channel 2 consumer investigator Justin Gray, made a significant discovery. It became evident that a substantial amount of money, potentially ranging in the tens to hundreds of millions, had been concealed.

Earlier this year, we began investigating Georgia’s unclaimed property program after coming across a significant problem. The state’s searchable website for unclaimed property only displayed claims exceeding $50.

You may have had multiple claims worth $20, $30, or $40 out there without even realizing it.

State Revenue Commissioner Frank O’Connell emphasized the importance of reuniting individuals with their money, stating that it is their responsibility to do so.

According to Channel 2, in 2023, the state only returned $39 million of the $253 million in unclaimed money it received, leaving the rightful owners with a significant amount still unclaimed.

The state made changes to its website after we started asking questions, making all unclaimed property easier to find.

On Monday, tune in to Channel 2 Action News at 5:00 p.m. for an exclusive revelation: we will unveil the key to claiming the money that the state might owe you. Additionally, we will showcase the inspiring story of one woman and her relentless pursuit to retrieve the $23,000 inheritance left by her late parents.
