Atlanta area man stopped by police while driving rental car, discovered it was reported stolen

Jeffery Elinor was taken aback by the body camera footage that captured him being pulled over in Carrollton on Tuesday evening.

Elinor recounted a terrifying incident where her anxiety levels skyrocketed. She vividly described the moment when she heard the command to pull over and was startled to see a group of individuals pointing their guns at her.

During his conversation with Channel 2 Investigative Reporter Ashli Lincoln, he expressed his surprise when the police, after handcuffing him, informed him that the reason for pulling him over was that the car he was driving was reported stolen.

Elinor expressed her disbelief, stating, “That’s impossible! I just rented this vehicle at 1 p.m.”

Channel 2 Action News recently acquired a police report from the Carrollton Police Department, which reveals that a Flock camera promptly alerted officers regarding the stolen SUV.

Elinor expressed her frustration, stating that someone at work failed to do their due diligence, resulting in a paying customer having to endure a traumatic experience.

During the search, the police found an AVIS receipt inside his car.

The police eventually released Elinor and permitted him to take the car back to AVIS.

Lincoln was advised by Elinor to intensify his response to the disappointment, as the customer service agent informed him that similar incidents had occurred in the past.

Elinor exclaimed, “He told me this happens once in a blue, and I guess I am that blue.”

Channel 2 Action News has contacted AVIS for a comment, but they have not yet responded.

Other rental car companies have also faced similar allegations in the past.

In 2022, Channel 2 Action News revealed that Hertz car rental had paid a staggering $168 million in a fraudulent lawsuit involving rental car theft. This lawsuit led to numerous customers being falsely accused of stealing cars that they had legally rented.
