Apartment fire in Portage leaves one person hospitalized and two pets deceased

A fire broke out at an apartment in Portage on Monday morning, resulting in one person being hospitalized and the loss of two pets.

The Portage Fire Department received a call at 11:15 a.m. regarding a kitchen fire in an apartment building located at 2383 Schultz Street. Upon arrival, thick black smoke was observed coming from the eaves and front windows.

Crews swiftly extinguished the fire and successfully rescued one woman. However, the fire had already spread to the attic. Once the fire in the attic was contained, the team focused on preventing water damage to the adjacent units.

A person was hospitalized due to potential smoke inhalation, while two pets found in the apartment were unfortunately unable to be saved despite the efforts of first responders to provide oxygen and care.

The authorities have confirmed that a minor overheated appliance was the cause of the fire. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the first responders. The American Red Cross is currently providing assistance to the residents who have been displaced as a result of the incident.
