The Philadelphia district attorney’s office is currently conducting an investigation following the arrest of Celena Morrison, a city official, and her husband.
Philadelphia’s executive director of the Office of LGBT Affairs, Morrison, was taken into custody alongside Darius McLean during a routine traffic stop on Saturday morning, as per police records.
The arrest was recorded by Morrison on video, capturing McLean on the ground on the shoulder of a roadway with an officer standing over him.
“Okay! They are!” McLean enthusiastically responds.
“That’s my husband! Please, that’s my husband!” exclaimed Morrison, her voice filled with desperation and urgency.
“I work for the mayor! I work for the mayor,” Morrison exclaimed to the officer, reassuring her husband not to worry.
Morrisson is instructed by the officer to turn around.
The camera ends up on the ground in what seems to be a scuffle of some sort.
“Don’t worry,” Morrison reassures her husband off camera. “I’m not sure why this is happening, but let’s stay calm. We haven’t done anything wrong.”
As the video reaches its conclusion, the officer raises his voice and warns McLean not to make any sudden movements or reach for anything.
“I can’t find my glasses!” he exclaims.
NBC News is unaware of the events leading up to the recording of the video.
A gray Infiniti sedan was pulled over by a Pennsylvania State trooper on Interstate 76 at 9:09 a.m. The reason for the traffic stop was multiple vehicle code violations observed by the officer, as stated by the police.
The alleged violations are not accompanied by any additional details.
According to a news release, before the trooper approached the operator of the Infiniti, a green Dodge sedan pulled up and parked behind the trooper’s patrol vehicle. The trooper then approached the Dodge, and the driver of the vehicle started verbally arguing with the trooper.
According to the police, the driver of the Dodge “ignored several lawful commands” and as a result, the trooper made an effort to apprehend the driver. However, the driver resisted the arrest, leading to a confrontation. Additionally, the driver of the Infiniti allegedly obstructed the trooper’s attempt to make the arrest.
Morrison and McLean, the two individuals, found themselves in hot water when they were apprehended and charged with a slew of offenses including resisting arrest, obstruction of justice, disorderly conduct, and other related charges, according to the authorities.
Morrison did not respond to comment requests right away, while Mclean was unreachable.
According to NBC News, an investigation is currently underway by the Pennsylvania State Police regarding the incident. Adam Reed, the spokesperson, mentioned that the trooper involved will not be on patrol during the ongoing investigation.
The Philadelphia district attorney’s office is actively investigating the arrests and has urged individuals with any information regarding the incident to come forward and provide their input.
In a statement, the district attorney’s office emphasized that it has not yet made a charging decision and is currently conducting a comprehensive and unbiased investigation. The office stated that it has no additional comments to provide at this time.
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker expressed her concern regarding the video in a statement issued on Saturday. She stated that she would refrain from making any further comments until the investigation is concluded.
