Georgia state representative accused of falsely claiming membership in Delta sorority

A newly-elected Georgia state representative has faced allegations of dishonesty regarding her sorority membership in order to secure more votes.

According to the sorority, she is not listed as a member.

Angela Moore emerged victorious in the primary race for District 91 state representative.

Moore’s opponent, Dee Haigler, accused her of dishonesty regarding her membership with the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.

The sorority has responded by issuing a statement, stating that they have found no records to verify her membership.

Channel 2’s Audrey Washington reached out to Moore and requested documentation over the phone on Thursday.

Moore initially denied the accusations of lying about being a Delta and accused her opponent of attempting to tarnish her reputation. She claimed that she had pledged under her previous married name and that her current name did not align with her membership records. At one point, she confidently stated that she possessed her membership card and supporting documents to prove her affiliation. However, during a subsequent conversation, she admitted to not having the necessary paperwork.

In the end, Washington asked her a simple question, “Are you a Delta?”

She replied, “No, I’m not.”

Later that evening, she sent a text message saying,

“I am currently undergoing a thorough investigation and verification of my membership by the national chapter.”

Washington had a scheduled meeting with Moore on Friday, but unfortunately, Moore failed to make an appearance.

Washington brought the issue to Haigler, her opponent.

Haigler expressed his doubts, questioning the trustworthiness of the judgment and credibility of the person in question.

A few years ago, Moore shared a photo on Twitter featuring herself wearing a Delta border and a captain that said, “Happy Founder’s Day.”

Washington was informed by Moore that Haigler is the one responsible for the controversy.

Haigler stated that he was not the one who disclosed the information about her being a member of Delta Sigma Theta. He emphasized that it was her own choice to share that fact with others, and therefore, she should be accountable for her actions.

Haigler expressed her desire for Moore to step forward and tell the truth.

“My mother ingrained in me the belief that the truth will inevitably surface,” Haigler shared. “And my wise grandmother used to say, ‘If it’s not revealed during the washing, it will surely be revealed during the rinsing.'”

When Washington asked Haigler about her thoughts on Moore resigning, she responded by stating that it should be left up to the people of District 91 to make that decision.

Washington also reached out to the Delta sorority in order to confirm whether Moore is conducting an investigation into the situation, but unfortunately, no response was received.

Amaris Johnson, the Southern Regional Director of Delta Sigma Theta, shared the following statement:

In the election for Georgia State Representative District 91, Dee Dawkins-Haigler stands as the sole candidate who is an officially initiated member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

I want to clarify that this email is not endorsing any candidate. However, I have been receiving multiple emails inquiring about the membership status of Angela Moore for the position mentioned earlier. It is important to note that while Ms. Moore claims to be a member of Delta Sigma Theta in different platforms, there is no evidence to validate her membership.
