The perpetrator who broke into the residence of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and viciously assaulted her husband, Paul Pelosi, with a hammer has been handed a 30-year prison sentence by the federal court.
In a statement released on Friday, the Pelosi family expressed their utmost pride in their father and his extraordinary bravery in saving his own life during the attack. They also commended him for testifying in the case. Speaker Pelosi and her family are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers they have received over the past eighteen months, as Mr. Pelosi continues to recover.
Christine Pelosi, daughter of the Pelosis, made an appearance in court on Friday. She took the opportunity to read victim impact statements on behalf of her family. This information was reported by San Francisco ABC station KGO.
David DePape faced legal consequences when he was found guilty in November 2023 for the break-in and assault that took place at the Pelosis’ residence in San Francisco on October 28, 2022.
During his confession, DePape openly acknowledged that his intention was to confront Nancy Pelosi and inquire about Russian interference in the 2016 election. He had planned to hold her captive, but unfortunately, only Paul Pelosi was present at the time of the break-in.
During his testimony, Paul Pelosi revealed that DePape had persistently inquired about Nancy’s whereabouts.
During the trial, DePape expressed remorse for the injury inflicted on the individual, stating, “I’m sorry that he got hurt.” DePape went on to explain that his reaction was prompted by the fact that his plan had essentially been thwarted.
The federal prosecutors were seeking a 40-year sentence for DePape after he was found guilty of attempting to kidnap a federal officer or employee, as well as assaulting a family member of a federal official.
Prosecutors emphasized that the defendant’s intention to impart violent lessons is not tolerated in our nation. Therefore, the court must hand down a sentence that accurately reflects the gravity and specifics of the offense.
According to The Associated Press, DePape’s attorneys requested a 14-year sentence.
DePape, who has pleaded not guilty, is also facing state charges, including attempted murder. His state trial is scheduled to commence on May 22nd.
