Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged the House of Representatives to vote in favor of providing additional aid to his country. This plea comes after the Senate approved a $95 billion foreign aid bill, which allocated $60 billion to Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude to the U.S. Senators who made a morally strong decision. He emphasized the significance of this choice, not only for Ukraine but also for other nations that face the threat of Russian aggression, both present and future. Zelenskyy shared his thoughts on X (previously known as Twitter).
He added that the next step would be a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives. He expressed anticipation for a strong moral choice and a decision that would work towards the benefit of our shared security.
During his visit to Washington in December, Zelenskyy had the opportunity to meet with President Joe Biden and influential lawmakers to advocate for increased assistance. However, Congress has faced numerous political obstacles that have hindered the progress of aid for Ukraine in both chambers.
The plan to combine foreign aid with border security funds, which was initially supported by both Democrats and Republicans, fell apart when Republicans withdrew their support. Additionally, some members of the GOP have been expressing growing opposition to providing Ukraine with more financial assistance.
Despite the political complications, both Democrats and many Republicans continue to express their support for providing additional aid to Ukraine. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell also stands in favor of this initiative. On Tuesday, the Senate successfully passed a significant foreign aid package, which included funding for Israel and Taiwan, without any border provisions.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell urged House Speaker Mike Johnson on Tuesday to hold a vote on providing aid to Ukraine. McConnell emphasized that he did not want to dictate how the vote should be conducted, showing deference to Johnson’s authority.
