Wisconsin Couple Gives Forever Home to Senior Dog After 11 Years in Alabama Shelter

After spending 11 years in an overcrowded Alabama animal shelter, a senior dog finally received some much-needed good news.

In March, Fergie, a 13-year-old, made the move to Wisconsin. She found herself in a comfortable foster home and was given the new name Fiona. After spending a few weeks in her new surroundings, Fiona was happily adopted by a loving family on the memorable day of Friday, April 5th.

Fiona has found her happily ever after, as shared in a Facebook update by Albert’s Dog Lounge, a foster-based dog rescue service that played a role in coordinating her move to Wisconsin.

“After spending 11 long years in the shelter, Fiona finally found her forever family!” exclaimed the shelter, proudly sharing heartwarming photos and videos of Fiona with her new owner.

Lindsey Decker, the owner of Madison DogMa and Vice President of Albert’s Dog Lounge.

Fiona arrived in Wisconsin in March and was placed with Lindsey Decker, the vice president of Albert’s Dog Lounge, until she found a permanent place, according to local outlets WECT and WMTV.

Fiona found herself in a temporary home, surrounded by other senior dogs for companionship. She had the opportunity to roam and explore several acres of yard, which was a stark contrast to the shelter where she had spent more than ten years of her life.

WCAX reported that Decker carefully reviewed numerous adoption applications before ultimately choosing Fiona’s new family. During her selection process, she made sure to consider factors such as the family’s availability at home, possession of a fenced-in yard, and ownership of other dogs. Eventually, she decided on the Saskowski family, who had previously adopted two dogs from the rescue service.

Carrie Saskowski expressed her deep sadness upon coming across the story online. She couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed by the fact that the sweet and lovable dog had been in the shelter for such a long time, and yet no one had come forward to adopt her.

In the midst of her sorrow, she expressed her heartfelt belief that they could build a beautiful life together. She said, “It was truly heartbreaking, and in that moment, I couldn’t help but think about the incredible life we could create as a couple.”

Fiona’s new home offers her a beautiful yard, the company of dog siblings, and pet parents who are excited to shower her with love and provide her with the best years of her life, according to Decker. She expressed her utmost joy and happiness for the canine’s future.

Saskowski expressed their love for Fiona and their commitment to providing her with the best care in a comment on Albert’s Dog Lounge’s Facebook update about the adoption. This heartfelt message solidifies Fiona’s happy ending.
