Ukraine apprehends two military officials in alleged assassination plot targeting President Volodymyr Zelensky

The Ukrainian security service has confirmed that they have successfully prevented an assassination attempt on President Volodymyr Zelensky and other high-ranking officials. The attempt was orchestrated by two undercover Ukrainian security officers who were working on behalf of Russia. This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia, as well as the constant threats faced by Ukrainian officials. The security service’s swift action and vigilance have undoubtedly saved lives and demonstrated their commitment to protecting their country’s leadership.

The Security Service of Ukraine, known as SBU, has recently confirmed on their Telegram channel that Russia has been actively working on plans to eliminate President Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials.

The two Ukrainian military colonels, who are currently in custody, were undercover Russian agents. They were allegedly operating under Russia’s Federal Security Service, also known as the FSB. Their role was to leak information to Ukraine’s enemy as part of a larger network of agents working against Ukraine.

“The progress of our special operation was closely monitored by a select few individuals,” revealed Vasyl Malyuk, the head of the SBU.

The SBU has revealed that, along with President Zelensky, the Russian plan also targeted Malyuk and Kyryll Budanov, the chief of the State Administration of Ukraine, along with several other prominent Ukrainian officials.

On Saturday, the Russian Interior Ministry added Zelensky to a criminal “wanted” list without providing any specific charges.

According to Malyuk, the failed attack, which he described as a “terrorist attack,” was intended to be a gift to Putin on his inauguration. However, he believes that it was actually a failure of the Russian special services.

The Ukrainian government has taken two colonels into custody and they could potentially face life imprisonment if they are found guilty by a Ukrainian court. The charges they are facing include “treason committed under martial law” and “preparation for a terrorist act.”

Malyuk acknowledged that Russia possesses great strength and experience that should not be underestimated. However, he affirmed Ukraine’s commitment to proactively take action to ensure that every traitor receives the appropriate and just punishment through the judicial system.

According to the SBU, the planned attack was overseen by known employees of Russia’s FSB, namely Maxim Mishustin, Dmitry Perlin, and Alexey Kornev.

According to a spokesperson from the Ukrainian State Security Department, Politico reports that this recent assassination plot targeting Zelensky stands out from previous attempts, including one involving a woman in August 2023.

Artem Dehtiarenko, speaking to Politico, revealed that this is the first instance where a senior official from the state security department has been exposed as a spy for the enemy.

According to allegations, Perlin took on the role of curator for the ‘moles’ in January 2022. However, prior to that, Kornev had been responsible for overseeing the ‘moles’ and had organized a series of secretive meetings with the Ukrainian colonel in neighboring European countries. These meetings often involved the transfer of funds or agents to foreign locations.
