Simon Guobadia, the recently married spouse of ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta (RHOA)’ celebrity Porsha Williams, 42, has faced a setback in his quest for U.S. citizenship. His application was denied due to his previous involvement in various felonies, including bank fraud, credit card fraud, and identity fraud. However, there is some hope for Guobadia as his case is currently being dismissed, indicating a potential path towards naturalization.
On January 11, Simon Iyore Guobadia filed a 13-page petition in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia: Atlanta Division. The civil action filing is against UR Mendoza Jaddou, the Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and Shineka Miller, the Director of the USCIS Atlanta Field Office.
Porsha Williams has confirmed that she is dating Simon Guobadia, who is the ex-husband of her former friend and “Real Housewives of Atlanta” castmate, Falynn Guobadia.
According to the documentation, Guobadia, who is 59 years old, submitted an application for U.S. citizenship and naturalization. However, on July 27, 2022, his application was denied. Following this, he requested a hearing, and the denial was subsequently “reaffirmed.” Guobadia, originally from Nigeria, initially arrived in the U.S. on August 11, 1982, but overstayed his visitor visa.
In 1985, he had his citizenship application denied, leading to his declaration of deportability. As a result, he made the decision to voluntarily leave the United States on December 28, 1985. However, he returned in June 1986 and once again overstayed his 6-month visitor visa. Subsequently, in September 1987, Simon Guobadia found himself arrested for bank and credit card fraud. Facing the charges, he ultimately pleaded guilty to the felony.

Simon Guobadia faced multiple legal issues throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. In January 1989, he was arrested for unauthorized use of a vehicle, and in May 1990, he faced another arrest, this time for fraud. Guobadia’s legal troubles continued in January 1991 when he committed a felony offense related to credit card fraud. Subsequently, in April 1991, an immigration judge ruled that Guobadia should be deported. Following this decision, on March 4, 1992, he was physically removed from the United States.
On October 24, 1988, prior to being deported, Guobadia faced accusations of utilizing an alternate identity to apply for temporary resident status through the Social Agricultural Worker (SAW) program. Despite concealing his criminal history and providing false information on his application, it was still approved, and he obtained a registration card as a temporary resident on July 25, 1991.

Simon Guobadia was granted permanent residency on April 27, 1992, after a brief waiting period. Surprisingly, just 26 days earlier, he had been deported under a different, undisclosed identity. The documents reveal that Guobadia attempted to apply for naturalization using a second identity on December 22, 2016. Unfortunately, his application was denied because his “temporary resident status was unlawfully granted.”
On December 31, 2020, he submitted another application for U.S. citizenship but was once again denied because he was not “lawfully admitted for permanent residence.” Seeking a resolution, Guobadia requested a hearing on October 24, 2022, but his denial was reaffirmed on November 15, 2022. Interestingly, it was during this same month that Guobadia tied the knot with ‘RHOA’ star Porsha Williams.
On March 13, 2023, Simon Guobadia lodged a complaint, urging the Court to overturn the denial and bestow him with U.S. citizenship. Nevertheless, on January 11, 2024, United States District Judge Steve C. Jones issued an order dismissing Guobadia’s naturalization case.
