Former President Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, who was recently elected as the co-chair of the Republican National Committee, revealed in a recent interview that the party does not intend to cover his ongoing legal expenses. She emphasized that donors have the option to refrain from contributing funds for this purpose if they so choose.
Lara Trump, in contrast to her father-in-law, expressed her disagreement regarding the significance of early and mail voting. She emphasized that Republicans are moving forward from the 2020 election. However, similar to Donald Trump, she continued to express skepticism about the election results, without presenting any substantiated evidence of widespread fraud.
During an appearance on NBC News on Wednesday, Lara Trump discussed a new joint fundraising committee that connects the Republican Party and the Trump campaign.
The arrangement of the new joint committee’s fine print implies that a key focus is directing funds towards the Trump campaign and Save America, a political action committee that has contributed substantially to Donald Trump’s ongoing legal expenses. Notably, Save America is given priority over the RNC and 40 state party committees in terms of the sequence of donation disbursements.
According to Lara Trump, donors are not obligated to contribute money through that particular method, NBC reported.
“You have the option to opt out of contributing to that small amount of money. If you don’t want your funds to be allocated towards Donald Trump’s legal bills, you can easily choose not to participate,” she explained.
The reference made was about the collaboration between the Trump campaign and the RNC in their joint fundraising committee. As part of this arrangement, a portion of the funds raised goes to Trump’s Save America leadership PAC, which is responsible for covering the former president’s legal expenses. However, donors also have the option to contribute directly to the RNC or to another fundraising entity that does not include Save America, as confirmed by an RNC spokesperson.
According to financial filings, legal bills comprise almost 80% of Save America’s total expenditures this year. However, a Trump spokesman clarified that Save America also allocates funds for a highly active and well-equipped post-Presidency office, as well as other miscellaneous expenses.
According to Lara Trump, the RNC does not endorse covering his legal expenses. It is worth noting that a previous attempt to pass a formal resolution prohibiting this support was unsuccessful within the party.
Lara Trump, who previously emphasized the need to allocate all of the party’s funds to Donald Trump’s reelection, seems to have adjusted her stance. Now, she recognizes the importance of supporting down-ballot races as well. In her own words, she stated, “I will make certain that every dollar is directed towards causes that Republican voters truly value.”

Lara Trump once again expressed her endorsement for early voting and vote-by-mail initiatives.
During the South Carolina primary last month, Donald Trump encouraged his supporters at campaign rallies to take advantage of in-person early voting. He spoke positively about this option, emphasizing the importance of casting their votes as early as possible.
Despite his ongoing public criticism, President Trump has consistently voiced his opposition to mail-in voting, claiming without evidence that it opens the door to fraudulent ballots.
“Cheating is inevitable whenever mail is involved,” falsely claimed Donald Trump during a recent interview with GB News’ Nigel Farage.
Lara Trump confidently stated during an NBC interview that the former president would alter his stance on the matter. She attributed this change of heart to the election security initiatives being developed by the RNC.
“We need to begin motivating Republican voters to engage in activities such as early voting and having confidence in mail-in voting. These are effective measures that can provide us with a significant advantage as we approach Election Day,” she expressed. “Historically, Republican voters have been hesitant to adopt such practices. For instance, legal ballot harvesting is something our party has never fully embraced. However, in this election cycle, we are wholeheartedly embracing it.”
According to her, her father-in-law is fully supportive of early voting and if you were to speak to him at this moment, you would witness his enthusiastic embrace of it.
Lara Trump, while asserting that “we’re past that” in reference to the 2020 election, which Donald Trump persistently alleges was tainted by fraud, also propagated baseless allegations regarding the integrity of that particular election.
“We have moved on from that. We have gained valuable insights and learned many lessons from it,” she stated during her interview on NBC, discussing the events of 2020.
When questioned about the trust of Republican voters in the outcome of the 2024 election in case Donald Trump loses and remains skeptical, she responded by stating that the RNC is currently implementing various measures to instill greater confidence among the people.
In contrast to the previous year, she claimed that the 2020 election was plagued with numerous problems. However, NBC countered her statement by highlighting the multiple audits and lawsuits that ultimately confirmed the legitimacy of the election results.
Local elections officials, representing both political parties, thoroughly examined and certified the 2020 election results nationwide. Their extensive investigations revealed no evidence of widespread fraud. Furthermore, it is important to note that no significant legal challenge to the election outcome has been successful.
ABC News has verified that the RNC has been inquiring about individuals’ beliefs regarding the alleged theft of the 2020 election during the hiring process, as per a trusted source.
Advisers to former President Trump have recently been inquiring about the 2020 presidential election views of current and potential RNC staffers. This seems to be a determining factor in the hiring process, according to The Washington Post.
According to Danielle Alvarez, a spokesperson for the RNC, they have been interviewing potential staffers who have worked in battleground states or are currently in states where fraud allegations have been prevalent. The aim is to find staff members who have firsthand experience and insights on how elections are won and lost, as well as real opinions based on their experiences in the field.
‘The reason that I’m here’
During her interview with NBC, Lara Trump appeared to have a different stance from the former president on the topic of abortion, despite asserting that they were in agreement. She stated that he supports the idea of letting individual states make their own decisions on the matter. However, it should be noted that he has not openly expressed support for a nationwide ban, a proposal that some Republicans have put forward.
According to ABC News, it has been reported that he believes the matter of abortion is best left to individual states. However, in private conversations, he has shown support for a national abortion ban at 16 weeks, with exceptions for cases of rape, incest, and when the life of the mother is at risk.
The Trump campaign did not deny the reporting at the time, but instead issued a statement affirming his commitment to finding middle ground on abortion.
During her appearance on NBC on Wednesday, Lara Trump responded to criticisms of nepotism in her new role.
“I believe my presence here is meant to provide reassurance to those who may have doubts about how their money is being utilized by the RNC. Can they have confidence in this organization? Can they contribute their funds to this entity?” she expressed. “Rest assured, as the daughter-in-law of Donald Trump, I can vouch for the trustworthiness of the RNC.”
