Newnan police report death of man who consumed Delta 9 gummy purchased from vape shop

Tragedy struck when a man lost his life after consuming an edible laced with Delta 9, according to authorities.

According to a report from Channel 2 Action News, officers responded to a call about an overdose at a residence in Newnan on March 10 around 4 a.m.

Upon their arrival, the officers were led upstairs where they encountered a motionless figure lying on the floor. It was unmistakably Derrell Johnson, a 25-year-old man.

According to the report, the officers made two attempts to administer Narcan to Johnson but decided to transport him to the hospital instead. Unfortunately, Johnson was pronounced dead later on that day.

Johnson’s girlfriend, who was with him when he collapsed, stated that they both consumed gummies from a pack labeled “High Gravity.” These gummies were said to contain 500mg Delta 9 edibles. She confirmed that Johnson only took the gummy and didn’t consume anything else.

According to Johnson’s girlfriend, they purchased the Delta 9 from a vape shop on Bullsboro Drive that same day.

Upon recovering the pack, law enforcement discovered three sealed packs containing ten gummies each, along with an empty pack inside the passenger door of the vehicle. The exact number of gummies consumed by Johnson was not disclosed by the officers.

The official cause of Johnson’s death has not been disclosed to the public.

The investigation is still ongoing.
