Michigan Congressman Tim Walberg is under fire for making a controversial statement that seemingly implies advocating for the use of a nuclear bomb on Gaza.
In a video shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, Walberg expressed his opinion, saying, “It should be like Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Let’s get it over with quickly.”
In regards to the US’s proposal of constructing a floating pier near Gaza for aid delivery, Walberg expressed his opinion that the US should refrain from allocating any funds towards humanitarian assistance.
During a recent town hall event, Walberg, a conservative Republican, made comments that have drawn criticism from fellow politicians.
“He should resign immediately; he is an utter disgrace,” he wrote.
Walberg said it was a metaphor
Representative Haley Stevens expressed her opinion on the clip through a post on social media. She firmly stated, “In the 21st Century, it is unacceptable to threaten, suggest, or even worse, use nuclear weapons as tactics of war.”
Rep. Dan Kildee expressed shock and horror at Walberg’s comments.
“It is absolutely unacceptable to oppose providing humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza while simultaneously advocating for the complete annihilation of the Palestinian people,” he expressed on X.
In a statement posted on X, Walberg sought to clarify his comments, explaining that he used a metaphor to emphasize the importance of Israel and Ukraine winning their wars quickly, without endangering American troops.
He emphasized the importance of ending the wars as quickly as possible to minimize the harm caused to innocent lives. He also highlighted the need for Hamas and Russia to surrender promptly in order to facilitate progress and resolution.
He added that the use of this metaphor, along with the removal of context, distorted his message. However, he fully stands by these beliefs and stands by our allies.
Before entering public office, Walberg had a notable career as a Christian pastor in Michigan and Indiana. Furthermore, his congressional website proudly highlights his commitment to upholding traditional values while serving in Washington, DC.
The conflict in Gaza erupted on October 7th when Hamas militants carried out a series of attacks in Israel, resulting in the loss of approximately 1,200 lives and the captivity of around 240 individuals.
Israel responded with a continuous barrage of airstrikes and launched a ground invasion of the area, resulting in a devastating loss of life for the Palestinian people. According to the health ministry controlled by Hamas, the death toll has already surpassed 32,000.
UN officials have issued a warning that many of the approximately two million residents in the Gaza Strip are now on the verge of famine.
