Michael Whatley formally declares his candidacy for RNC Chair

On Monday, Michael Whatley, the Chair of the North Carolina GOP, declared his intention to run for the leadership position of the Republican National Committee.

In a letter obtained by POLITICO, Whatley emphasized his endorsement for the post from former President Donald Trump, who is leading the race for the GOP nomination.

“I am deeply honored to have President Trump’s endorsement for this position, and I am committed to earning your vote as we embark on the important task of winning at every level in the 2024 elections,” stated Whatley.

Just hours after the current RNC Chair, Ronna McDaniel, announced her upcoming departure, an announcement was made regarding new leadership at the committee. In preparation for the general election, Trump has endorsed Whatley as chair, his daughter-in-law Lara Trump as co-chair, and his senior campaign adviser Chris LaCivita as the RNC’s chief operating officer.

Whatley is poised to become the RNC’s chair, as he enjoys strong support from the majority of its members. This is not surprising, considering Trump’s widespread endorsement among these members. The election has been scheduled for March 8 in Houston.

In his letter, Whatley expressed his vision for the committee, emphasizing the importance of the RNC’s focus on registering new voters, mobilizing voters to participate in elections, and maximizing opportunities to expand our lead in crucial states nationwide.

He also emphasized his commitment to a cause that is important to Trump, stating that the committee will tirelessly pursue legal action when necessary, as well as recruit and train a large number of poll watchers and workers.

According to insiders familiar with the former president’s thinking, Whatley, who has previously held the position of RNC’s general counsel, earned Trump’s endorsement partly due to his emphasis on matters related to “election integrity.” As a testament to their alliance, Whatley joined Trump on stage during his recent South Carolina victory celebration.
