Mayor and wife of Atlantic City are charged with physical and emotional abuse of an adolescent daughter

Mayor Marty Small Sr. of Atlantic City, New Jersey, and his wife have been accused of physically and emotionally abusing their teenage daughter, according to officials who made the announcement on Monday.

Marty Small, a 50-year-old Democrat, and his wife, La’Quetta Small, 47, face charges of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, as announced by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office. Additionally, Marty Small is charged with third-degree terroristic threats, third-degree aggravated assault, and disorderly persons simple assault.

La’Quetta Small, the superintendent of the Atlantic City Public Schools, is facing charges of disorderly persons simple assault.

Mayor Small declined to comment on the charges when reached by text on Monday. He referred NBC Philadelphia to his attorney, who had no immediate comment.

La’Quetta Small refrained from providing an immediate response concerning the charges.

The spokesperson for Atlantic City declined to comment on the allegations on Monday and directed all questions to the mayor’s attorney.

On March 28, authorities conducted a search of Mayor Small’s residence. Following this, on April 1, the mayor, together with his wife and daughter, participated in a news conference held in Atlantic City. During the conference, Mayor Small confidently stated that he had “nothing to hide.” Additionally, he addressed and refuted the rumors surrounding his daughter’s alleged pregnancy and the claim that his wife had assaulted her, supposedly captured on video by their son.

Small also talked about the arrest of Constance Days-Chapman, the principal of Atlantic City High School. She is facing charges for not reporting to the appropriate authorities when a student confided in her about experiencing emotional and physical abuse from their parents.
