Filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo, known for directing major Marvel hits like “Captain America: Civil War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” don’t attribute Marvel’s recent struggles to superhero fatigue. Despite the studio’s challenges in 2023 with underperforming films such as “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “The Marvels,” the Russos believe that the issue lies in the evolving methods of consuming media, affecting Hollywood as a whole, and not just Marvel. In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, the directors emphasized that the changes in how people engage with content have had a broader impact on the industry.
According to Shawn Levy, director of “Deadpool and Wolverine,” prior knowledge of the MCU is not necessary to enjoy the film. Levy emphasizes that he wants moviegoers to have a seamless and enjoyable experience without requiring them to do any homework beforehand.
“I believe that the current state of affairs is reflected in our industry. It’s a challenging and intriguing time,” remarked Joe Russo. “We’re in a period of transition, and it seems like people are unsure about how they will embrace stories in the future or what kind of stories they will prefer.”
“There is a significant divide among generations in terms of how they consume media,” he explained. “There is a generation that is accustomed to appointment viewing and going to a theater on a specific date to watch something, but they are getting older. On the other hand, the new generation wants instant access and immediate processing, quickly moving on to the next thing while multitasking. This is a very different era compared to what we have seen before. Therefore, I believe that everyone, including Marvel, is going through this transition. This shift in consumer behavior is likely the main factor at play here.”
According to Joe Russo, the current generation of moviegoers primarily relies on short and concise forms of communication such as memes and headlines. He further emphasizes that people nowadays tend to skim through content, often not reading beyond the first two sentences. Additionally, Russo points out the popularity of 10-second videos on social media platforms, which users quickly swipe through.
“I believe that the traditional two-hour format of movies, which has been around for over a century, is starting to evolve,” he stated. “There is a new wave of storytellers emerging, and they are seeking innovative ways to capture the attention of the next generation, who often have shorter attention spans and a desire for more personalized narratives.”
According to Anthony Russo, the concept of superhero fatigue is not specific to superheroes themselves but rather a general feeling of fatigue.
“The question of superhero fatigue has been a long-standing concern,” Anthony explained. “We encountered this issue even in the early days of our superhero work. However, it’s important to note that similar complaints were made about westerns in the past, yet they remained popular for decades. Westerns were constantly reinvented and pushed to new boundaries as time went on.”
Ray Chan, the talented Art Director behind “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Avengers: Endgame,” has sadly passed away at the age of 56.
As the debate over superhero fatigue persists in the world of comic book movies, Paul Dano, the actor portraying the villain in “The Batman,” recently gained attention for expressing a different perspective. In an interview with The Independent, Dano suggested that this fatigue might actually have its benefits.
“It’s a fascinating time where we all have to ask ourselves, ‘What’s next?'” remarked Dano. “Hopefully, someone will inject fresh energy into the realm of comic book movies, or perhaps something entirely different will flourish, something beyond the realm of superheroes. I’m certain that there are still some remarkable ones on the horizon, but I believe it’s an opportune moment for change.”
Joseph Quinn, who will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Johnny Storm/Human Torch in the highly anticipated film “The Fantastic Four,” recently expressed his lack of concern regarding superhero fatigue. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he shared his excitement as he prepares to make his superhero debut.
Quinn expressed his thoughts on concerns about superhero fatigue, stating that the team behind the Fantastic Four film is determined to ensure its success. He acknowledged that the story of the Fantastic Four offers unique and distinct aspects compared to other Marvel films, which he finds compelling. Quinn specifically praised the film’s director, Matt Shakman, describing him as brilliant, along with the talented cast. Having read the script, Quinn shared his excitement, emphasizing that it is truly brilliant, and he is grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it.
