Arizona Republican Congresswoman Debbie Lesko has announced her candidacy for Maricopa County Supervisor in District 4. Lesko made the filing on Friday, expressing her intention to run for the position.
Lesko made an announcement in October that she would not run for re-election in the Eighth Congressional District.
“I am looking forward to spending more quality time with my husband, my 94-year-old mother, my three children, and my five grandchildren,” she expressed in a statement, as reported by The Center Square.
The door was thrown wide open for a highly competitive Republican primary race after her decision. It paved the way for a showdown between several notable contenders, including former Attorney General nominee Abraham Hamadeh, former United States Senate nominee Blake Masters, Arizona House Speaker Ben Toma, state Sen. Anthony Kern, and former Congressman Trent Franks.
While Lesko has shown support for former President Donald Trump, they have diverged in their endorsements for her successor. Lesko endorses Toma, while Trump backs Hamadeh.
The congresswoman decided to enter the race for her own future political ambitions after Supervisor Clint Hickman announced that he would not seek re-election. Supervisor Hickman, along with other Maricopa County officials, faced intense scrutiny and threats in relation to the elections.
On Friday, she expressed her gratitude to Maricopa County Supervisor Clint Hickman for his dedicated service to the people of the West Valley and Maricopa County. She took to Twitter to thank him and wished him and his family numerous blessings in their future endeavors. She also acknowledged that his contributions to the well-being of the people in the West Valley will always be cherished.
As of Monday morning, Lesko has not yet made a formal announcement regarding her campaign launch. The supervisor district, much like her congressional district, leans towards the right.
Other individuals who have already entered the race include Robert Canterbury, a seasoned candidate, Jack Hastings, a City Councilman from Surprise, and Dr. Robert Branch, a Commissioner for the county’s Parks and Recreation department.
