In her candid interview, she highlighted that while there has been progress, the industry still predominantly favors a select group of women in the studio world. Stewart cautioned against overstating the scope of changes for women in Hollywood, emphasizing that there is still much work to be done.
Stewart expressed her thoughts on the notion that by simply featuring a few female-led projects, the film industry can eradicate the influence of patriarchy. She criticized the industry for patting itself on the back for producing movies like Maggie Gyllenhaal’s and Margot Robbie’s, while neglecting the vast number of talented women who are still underrepresented.
Stewart expressed her admiration for women and acknowledged her love for them. However, she also shared her concern about the authenticity of congratulating each other for broadening perspectives, especially if there hasn’t been enough progress made in that regard. According to Stewart, true progress cannot be achieved if we simply stop at acknowledging our efforts without actually continuing to broaden our perspectives.
Stewart has been facing challenges in securing financing for her first feature film as a director, titled “The Chronology of Water.” In an interview with Variety earlier this year, she expressed her determination to prioritize her directorial debut over taking on new acting projects. Stewart emphasized the importance of getting her film off the ground before pursuing other acting opportunities.
“I won’t work for anyone else before making this movie,” she declared confidently. “I’m ready to quit the damn industry if I have to. I won’t even consider making another film until I bring this vision to life. I can guarantee you that. I believe it will kickstart my career.”
Stewart expressed her purpose for attending the 2024 Sundance festival, stating that she was not only there to premiere new movies but also to seek financing for her upcoming film. She confidently declared, “That’s why we’re here. I’m determined to make that movie!”
