Kevin Costner Rejects Chris Hemsworth’s Pitch, Casts Himself in New Movie Instead: “I’ll Take the Role If I’m Still Young Enough”

In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Chris Hemsworth shared an interesting anecdote about his attempt to secure a role in a Kevin Costner-directed project. To his surprise, Hemsworth discovered that Costner had ultimately chosen to cast himself as the character instead. Although Hemsworth did not disclose the specific movie, he described it as “abstract and interesting,” emphasizing that it revolved around a small story centered on a man and a woman.

Chris Hemsworth shared an anecdote about a movie script he was interested in. He expressed his desire to be a part of the project, but unfortunately, he found out that Kevin Costner had already been cast for the role. Hemsworth also mentioned his admiration for Costner as a director and tried to convince him to reconsider, but Costner remained firm in his decision. Hemsworth humorously added, “I spent an hour the other day trying to convince him, and he was like, ‘I’m doing it, kid.’ Didn’t work. I didn’t get the part.”

Hemsworth mentioned that he was drawn to star in the project because his character is a “horse wrangler” and there are horses involved.

Chris Hemsworth revealed that his wife was the one who encouraged him to take on the role in the film, as she is a horse lover herself. Hemsworth shared that they even have a considerable number of horses back home, which further fueled his wife’s enthusiasm for him to be a part of the project.

Costner himself shared his thoughts on turning Hemsworth down in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. He expressed his willingness to play the love story as long as he is still young enough for the role. Costner praised Hemsworth, describing him as handsome and talented, but emphasized that Hemsworth will have to wait his turn to find his own love story. Costner stated that he is glad Hemsworth likes the current love story but mentioned that if he ever feels he cannot do it, he would reach out to Hemsworth. Costner acknowledged Hemsworth as one of the great leading men of today.

Warner Bros. plans to release the first film in theaters on June 28, followed by the second film on August 16. If these initial movies perform well, Costner intends to continue the franchise with two additional films.
