Did you know that there was possibly the largest baby ever born in a hospital in Upstate New York?
In March 2019, the Arnot Odgen Medical Center in Elmira celebrated the arrival of an extraordinary baby girl. Weighing an impressive 15 pounds and 15 ounces, and measuring 23.2 inches long, she quickly became the hospital’s largest recorded baby. Many believe she holds the title of the heaviest newborn in the state’s history.
In an interview with a local media outlet, Joy Buckley, a new mother who was completely exhausted, commented on the hefty bundle.
I knew she was going to be big, but I didn’t anticipate no 15-pound baby!
Joy affectionately referred to her baby girl, Harper, as a “miracle baby” due to Joy’s previous diagnosis of polycystic ovarian syndrome. Harper was brought into the world through a planned C-section, an experience that left Joy feeling as if she had been struck by two tractor-trailers at once.
Harper Buckley came into the world already weighing as much as most children do at 5 months old. Typically, newborns weigh between 5 pounds, 8 ounces and 8 pounds, 13 ounces.
SO WHAT’S THE *WORLD* RECORD?
The Guinness Book of World Records states that the largest baby ever recorded weighed a whopping 22 lbs and measured an impressive 28 inches in length. This record-breaking baby was born in 1879 to a mother who suffered from gigantism and stood at an astonishing height of nearly 8 feet. Unfortunately, this remarkable baby passed away just 11 hours after birth.
Harper Buckley is going to celebrate his 4th birthday on March 20th, 2023, and we wish him and his mother good health and happiness!
