Houston Texans wide receiver, Tank Dell, wasted no time getting back on the field after recovering from a gunshot wound to his leg. Despite the injury, Dell showed his resilience by actively participating in the team’s OTAs just a month later.
Dell suffered a minor gunshot wound during a private event in Sanford, Florida. The incident occurred on April 28, when a teenage gunman injured 10 individuals following an altercation. Fortunately, Dell’s injury was not severe, and he was able to be discharged from the hospital soon after the shooting.
The Texans’ third-round pick in 2023 had full participation in individual drills, 7-on-7s, and 11-on-11s without any limitations.
Texans coach DeMeco Ryans expressed his happiness over Tank’s return to the field, acknowledging the challenging circumstances he had faced. “We’re thrilled to have him back, doing what he loves โ playing football,” Ryans shared. It’s a joy to witness Tank’s agility and skill, as he continues to make impactful plays and contribute as a dynamic player. The entire team eagerly awaits his performance.”
Dell faced more than just the challenge of recovering from a shooting incident. He was also dealing with a broken leg that he sustained during a game against the Denver Broncos in early December. Despite his injuries, Dell had an impressive rookie season, accumulating 709 receiving yards and scoring seven touchdowns. He was on track to reach 1,205 yards if he had not been sidelined. The connection between Dell and Pro Bowl quarterback C.J. Stroud resulted in them being the eighth-most productive first-year quarterback and wide receiver duo in terms of passing yards.
Nico Collins stepped up as the leader of the receiver group after Dell’s injury, putting up impressive numbers with 1,297 receiving yards. He even had multiple games where he surpassed 190 yards. To further strengthen their receiving corps, the Texans made a big move during the offseason by acquiring Stefon Diggs, a four-time Pro Bowl receiver, in a blockbuster trade with the Buffalo Bills.
Teaming up with Collins and Diggs, Dell has made a full recovery and the Texans are optimistic about their potent passing game under the leadership of Stroud.
According to Ryans, having receivers with multiple skill sets is essential in causing problems for the opposing defense. He emphasized the importance of having different body types and types of movers to create difficulties for the defense. Ryans believes that the combination of these three receivers allows the team to put defenses in tough situations due to their distinct abilities. Despite their differences, all three receivers possess explosive finishing skills, making them exceptional players. They have the ability to make crucial plays on third downs and find their way into the end zone.
