Georgia Republican criticizes fellow party members for aligning with Trump and supports Biden’s stance

Former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan (R) made a surprising announcement on Monday, expressing his support for President Biden in the upcoming November election. In doing so, Duncan also took the opportunity to critique fellow Republicans who blindly align themselves with former President Trump.

In a recent op-ed published in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Duncan expressed his disappointment in witnessing a growing number of Republicans aligning themselves with Trump.

In light of recent events, he expressed his determination to throw his support behind Biden, the Democratic candidate, over the presumptive Republican nominee. He justified his decision by emphasizing the disqualification of the Republican nominee due to his conduct and character.

“But in order for the GOP to rebuild, we must move beyond the Trump era. As a conservative Republican who is not driven by anger, I feel compelled to vote for Biden. However, we should also strive to elect GOP congressional majorities to counterbalance his second-term legislative agenda and ensure a system of checks and balances,” expressed Duncan.

Duncan cited Trump’s New York hush money case as one of the factors why he won’t be endorsing him. Furthermore, he criticized Trump for endorsing baseless conspiracy theories that contributed to the unfortunate events of January 6, 2021.

Duncan, once considered a potential third-party presidential candidate, criticized Trump and his allies for their involvement in fake elector schemes following the 2020 election.

According to Duncan, there are some individuals who might identify as “reluctant Trump supporters” and justify their support for Trump by citing policy differences with Biden or the perceived chaos on college campuses. However, Duncan disagrees with these arguments, as he believes that Trump’s final year in office was far from peaceful.

According to Duncan, it is important for us to believe that Trump has revealed his true nature to us. Duncan believes that expecting Trump to change at the age of 77 is highly unlikely.

In his concluding remarks, he mentioned that he has been a lifelong member of the Republican Party but will still cast his vote for Biden.

“I have been a member of the GOP my entire life, unlike Trump. This November, I will be casting my vote for a person who may have different policies than mine, but is a decent individual. In contrast, Trump is a criminal defendant who lacks a moral compass,” he expressed.

Duncan considered the possibility of becoming a candidate for No Labels, a political organization aiming to promote a bipartisan unity ticket. However, he made the decision to withdraw his name from consideration in March.

No Labels made an announcement last month stating that they will not continue with their pursuit of a unity ticket due to their inability to find a suitable candidate.
