It is with great sadness that I learn of the passing of an extraordinary young woman, activist, and hero, Hydeia Broadbent. Back in 1992, I had the privilege of participating in a Nickelodeon special called “A Conversation with Magic,” where I had the opportunity to meet Hydeia, who was just 7 years old at the time. Our encounter left a lasting impact on me. Hydeia, with her incredible bravery, brought attention to the challenges of living with HIV from birth. Her dedication to activism made her a true catalyst in the fight against HIV/AIDS. By fearlessly sharing her story at such a young age, she touched the lives of countless individuals, both young and old, and shattered the stereotypes surrounding HIV and AIDS. Hydeia showed the world that those living with these conditions are ordinary people who deserve respect and compassion.
