Denial of public defender to man charged with killing police officer and process server

According to recently filed court documents in Jackson County Circuit Court, the suspect charged with the murder of Independence Police Officer Cody Allen and Jackson County Civil Process Server Drexel Mack has been denied a public defender.

On March 15, Larry Acree, who is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, appeared in court without legal representation. Additionally, approximately twelve Independence police officers were present at the hearing.

Acree completed an application for the public defender’s office during the hearing.

According to a recent filing, the public defender’s office has denied Acree’s request for legal services. The reason cited for this denial is that Acree’s income and/or available assets exceed the guidelines set by the office.

Acree’s eligibility for legal services will be determined in a hearing scheduled for this Friday.

He is currently being held at the Jackson County Adult Detention Center on a bond of $2 million, which must be paid in cash.

The public defender’s office clarified their denial in response to the recent update.
