Authorities report at least 2 fatalities, including a student, in school bus crash

According to a law enforcement official, a “major” crash on a Texas highway resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including a student. The incident involved a school bus carrying prekindergarten children.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a passenger vehicle and a concrete truck were also part of the collision.

According to ABC News, the fatalities in the accident involved a male student who was traveling on the bus and a man who was driving a Dodge Charger. Texas DPS spokesperson Deon Cockrell confirmed this information.

According to the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office, a significant traffic incident took place on Friday afternoon on State Highway 21 West at Caldwell Road.

According to initial reports, the school bus was heading west on the highway at approximately 2 p.m. local time when a concrete truck unexpectedly swerved into its lane, as stated by Cockrell during a press briefing. The concrete truck collided with the front of the bus, causing it to overturn onto its side.

According to Cockrell, the car involved in the accident was following behind the bus.

According to Austin-Travis County EMS Division Chief Kevin Parker, first responders assessed a total of 53 individuals at the crash scene.

Four people were transported in critical condition via helicopter, according to Parker. It remains unclear which vehicle they were traveling in.

According to Parker, six individuals were also taken to the hospital by ground transportation due to “potentially serious injuries.”

According to the official, a few individuals who were assessed had minor injuries and were transported by ground. Meanwhile, there were also some individuals who did not need any form of transportation.

A group of prekindergarten students from Tom Green Elementary School in Hays County were on a bus ride back from a field trip to the Bastrop Zoo when they were involved in a “serious accident,” as stated by the Hays Consolidated Independent School District.

A total of 55 individuals were on the bus, comprising 44 students and 11 adults, as confirmed by the school district.
