Angela Bassett to deliver commencement address and receive honorary degree at Spelman College

The commencement speaker for next month’s ceremony at Spelman College has been announced, according to a recent announcement made on Thursday.

Award-winning actress Angela Bassett is set to address the Class of 2024 at Spelman College and will be presented with an honorary degree. In addition to Bassett, other notable individuals who will be recognized by the college include U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, WABE’s Rose Scott, and Rev. Dr. Yvette Flunder.

According to Dr. Helene D. Gayle, President of Spelman College, the esteemed actress and director Angela Bassett will be delivering an inspirational message to the graduating Class of 2024.

“Our students find inspiration in her impactful work, both on and off the screen, as she sets an example for them to lead in their respective fields. It is a great honor to welcome esteemed Black women, such as Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, Atlanta community icon Rose Scott, and Reverend Dr. Yvette Flunder, to join us for our weekend ceremonies. Their presence will undoubtedly inspire our graduates, their families, and the entire Spelman community.”

Bassett is quite familiar with Atlanta.

In her notable career, she dedicated years to shooting the highly acclaimed films “Black Panther” and its sequel “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Her outstanding performance in the latter earned her an Academy Award nomination for “Best Supporting Actress.” Additionally, she received a nomination for “Best Actress” for her remarkable portrayal of Tina Turner in the 1993 film “What’s Love Got to Do With It.”

Spelman College has scheduled its Baccalaureate Ceremony for Saturday, May 18 at 10 a.m. The graduation ceremony will follow on Sunday, May 19 at 3 p.m. These significant events will be held at the Georgia International Convention Center.

President Joe Biden has been chosen as the keynote speaker for the upcoming graduation ceremony at Morehouse College, which is located nearby.
