Alfonso Ribeiro, widely recognized for his portrayal of a beloved character in “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” has recently opened up about the mixed emotions he experiences when reflecting on his iconic role.
In a recent interview with Closer Weekly, Ribeiro opened up about the impact of playing the iconic role of Carlton Banks on his acting career. He described it as both a blessing and a curse, stating, “Playing Carlton on ‘Fresh Prince’ was a sacrifice. It was one of the greatest roles I had the privilege to portray, but it also became the role that prevented me from pursuing further acting opportunities. People couldn’t see me as anyone else.” Ribeiro expressed his frustration at being typecast and acknowledged the sacrifice he made, ultimately leading to the end of his acting career.
Alfonso Ribeiro shares his perspective on the backlash he received from the black community after marrying a white woman.
Ribeiro holds no grudges against the series and instead fondly recalls some of his cherished moments from filming. He reflects on the camaraderie amongst the cast, particularly the pre-show rituals in Will Smith’s dressing room. They would play music, dance, and cultivate a vibrant energy to prepare for the show. These memories of togetherness hold a special place in his heart.
“I’m really enjoying my role as a host and I couldn’t be happier,” Ribeiro shared with Closer Weekly, even though he hasn’t taken on any significant acting projects lately.
He added that if it was the perfect opportunity, he would consider returning to acting.
At the age of 52, Ribeiro is currently co-hosting “Dancing with the Stars” alongside Julianne Hough, after winning season 19 in 2014. Furthermore, he is the host of two shows on ABC, namely “America’s Funniest Home Videos” and “Jack Hanna’s Passport.”
“My career has been filled with many joyful moments, but two of the most significant milestones for me were winning ‘Dancing With the Stars’ and now being chosen as the host of the show. It’s truly a dream come true for me. After my victory on ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ I was given the incredible opportunity to host another show that I’ve always aspired to be a part of – ‘America’s Funniest Home Videos’,” Ribeiro expressed with enthusiasm.
At the age of 8, Ribeiro embarked on his career, which eventually led him to a remarkable experience of starring in a Pepsi commercial alongside Michael Jackson. Reflecting on this incredible achievement, Ribeiro shared, “It was truly amazing. I was a huge fan, and we ended up becoming friends. It was a very special connection.” Recalling a humorous anecdote from their rehearsals, Ribeiro revealed, “I couldn’t understand why it was taking Michael so long to grasp such simple choreography. Then it hit me, ‘Oh, he’s not learning it, he’s perfecting it.’ Every movement, every fingertip had to be precisely as he wanted it. I learned that it’s not about how quickly you do something; it’s about ensuring every detail is just right.”
