AI used by parents of gun violence victims to simulate their voices in calls to Congress

Parents who have lost their children to gun violence have employed the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to replicate their children’s voices in calls made to Congress. Through this innovative approach, these grieving parents are urging lawmakers to take action and reform the nation’s gun laws. This campaign was launched on the sixth anniversary of the tragic Parkland, Florida shooting.

Gun control advocacy groups Change the Ref and March For Our Lives have come together to create a powerful tool called The Shotline. This innovative platform enables individuals to send the AI-generated voices of six gun violence victims directly to members of Congress.

“It was six years ago when I was still a senior at Parkland,” expresses Oliver’s AI-generated voice. “During that time, a tragic incident occurred on Valentine’s Day, where numerous students and educators lost their lives due to an individual wielding an AR-15. However, it seems that you have never truly shown any concern or taken any action. It’s been six long years, and yet, not a single effort has been made by you to prevent the ongoing series of shootings that have plagued us.”

The website also showcases the AI-generated voice of 10-year-old Uziyah “Uzi” Garcia, who tragically lost his life in the 2022 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Uzi’s father, Brett Cross, recently shared a heartfelt message from his son on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Uziyah’s voice has been our guiding force for 631 days,” Cross expressed in the post. “Today, his message resonates with everyone, particularly our politicians.”
