Democratic governors criticized a report released by special counsel Robert Hur on Friday. Although the report cleared the president of any wrongdoing regarding his handling of classified information, it did take jabs at his age and memory.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, who is acting as a surrogate for President Joe Biden’s reelection, expressed skepticism when questioned about the Hur report, saying, “I sense something suspicious.”
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker expressed his strong disapproval of a Trump appointee from the Department of Justice who made personal judgments about the mental acuity and age of the President of the United States. Pritzker deemed this act as highly unfair during an unrelated news conference in Illinois.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul came to Biden’s defense, questioning the language used in the report and suggesting that politics may have influenced its content. She raised concerns about the report’s credibility, pointing out that it was prepared by a former employee of Donald Trump, who is a Republican.
According to Hur’s review, classified documents were found in Biden’s home. However, the president will not face charges as there was no evidence of willful intent and he fully cooperated with the investigation.
The Democratic governors and other allies of Biden who had been closely monitoring the case commended the decision.
According to the report, the president, who is 81 years old, would not face prosecution due to the perception that a jury would view him as an elderly individual with a weak memory.
Republicans at all levels quickly latched onto the phrase, seizing the opportunity to reinforce their long-standing claim that Biden is too old to run for president again. On the other hand, Democrats, who have been hesitant to address this issue, have now been compelled to provide a response due to the emergence of the Hur report.
“Let’s get straight to the point,” Hochul asserted. “According to the report, there is no basis for bringing any charges against him. This clears him of any wrongdoing, which is quite different from Donald Trump, who currently faces a staggering 91 indictments. This sharp contrast is worth discussing.”
Trump is currently facing federal criminal charges for mishandling and improperly storing classified documents. Additionally, he is being accused of resisting cooperation with federal authorities. Despite these allegations, Trump maintains his innocence.
In relation to the Trump classified documents case, Pritzker also mentioned that the former president’s actions could be seen as treason. He noted that Trump had hidden classified documents and was not transparent when questioned about it.
The Illinois governor, who comes from a wealthy background as an heir to the Hyatt Hotel empire, has been a significant contributor to the Democratic Party. He played a crucial role in spearheading the campaign to bring the Democratic National Convention to Chicago in August. As a result, he has had numerous opportunities to interact closely with Biden over the years.
“I have had the opportunity to meet with the president of the United States on multiple occasions,” Pritzker shared. “He is incredibly knowledgeable and remains up-to-date on a wide range of topics. His depth of understanding surpasses that of most individuals.”
Vice President Kamala Harris, along with Pritzker and Hochul, shared similar sentiments when addressing inquiries about the matter on Friday.
“The characterization of the president’s demeanor in that report is completely inaccurate,” she stated, “and it is clear that it is driven by political motives, without any basis.”
