A high school football coach from Alabama, Chris Smelley, who went fishing in his kayak and didn’t return, has been found safe in Walton County, FL. The search for him had a positive outcome.
The search is currently underway for Chris Smelley, a former Alabama football player who has gone missing in the Gulf of Mexico.
The U.S. Coast Guard from Mobile found Smelley approximately 15 miles offshore.
The Walton County Sheriff’s Office announced on Thursday that they were actively searching for a kayaker who had gone missing in the Gulf of Mexico near Grayton Beach.
Officials reported that Chris Smelley, aged 37, embarked on a fishing trip in his blue and black kayak at approximately 8:30 am. However, he has yet to return. The search for Chris was initiated, with the WCSO and South Walton Fire District utilizing jet skis to scour the waters off Grayton Beach in an effort to locate him.
Smelley, a former quarterback for South Carolina, has transitioned into his role as the football coach at Sylacauga High School. Prior to his coaching career, he showcased his football skills while playing for American Christian Academy in Tuscaloosa during his high school years.
Brad Smelley, the younger brother of the author, had the opportunity to play as a tight end for Alabama under the guidance of Nick Saban.
Several agencies joined forces to conduct the search.
