Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach announced on Thursday that he will be joining forces with ten other state attorneys general in a lawsuit against the Biden Administration’s student loan forgiveness program.
A federal court is currently reviewing a multi-state lawsuit that challenges the authority of the U.S. Department of Education to modify student loan repayment plans. The lawsuit argues that this action would effectively eliminate over $156 million in student loan debt. Additionally, it points out that the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated a previous version of President Biden’s student loan program last year, stating that it violated federal law. The Court emphasized that only Congress has the power to authorize the forgiveness of student loans, as it involves the expenditure of taxpayer money.
Attorneys general from Alabama, Alaska, Idaho, Iowa, Louisiana, Montana, Nebraska, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah have joined Kobach in the lawsuit.
