Tammy Baldwin responds to GOP criticism of financing for a program that aids at-risk youths

Republicans are voicing their criticism towards Wisconsin Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin for allocating federal funds to a nonprofit organization in Dane County that supports at-risk youths. They argue that these funds may potentially be used for a program catering to gay and transgender children, without the necessity of parental consent.

Republicans have focused their attention on Baldwin’s earmark to the youth services group. They are particularly concerned about the organization’s Teens Like Us Program, which provides counseling to LGBTQ children and offers support for gender affirmation through the provision of clothing.

A tweet from a right-wing X account gained almost 1 million views, discussing Baldwin’s request and highlighting the clothing aspect. The tweet also pointed out that the program allows young individuals to participate without the need for parental or guardian consent. In response, the Republican Party of Wisconsin released a statement claiming that Baldwin prioritized being “woke” over the concerns of Wisconsin parents.

The request posted on Baldwin’s website last year specified that the funds were designated for the purpose of providing therapeutic and clinical counseling to youth experiencing homelessness. A spokesperson for Baldwin clarified that the request was made through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration and, as a result, it would be prohibited to use the funds for the activities outlined in the Teens Like Us Program.

Briarpatch Youth Services plans to utilize the funds for their initiatives aimed at assisting children facing homelessness. This includes the implementation of a counseling program and the recruitment of a licensed clinical social worker, as stated by Baldwin’s office.

Republicans wasted no time pouncing on the request made by Baldwin, who is currently campaigning for reelection in a critical race that will play a significant role in determining which party will have control of the Senate in the upcoming year.

According to Baldwin, the funding is intended to assist homeless youths.

According to a statement from Eli Rosen, a spokesperson for Senator Baldwin, she takes great pride in providing resources for Wisconsin to support children who are facing homelessness. The goal is to ensure that these children receive the necessary care and assistance to help them overcome their challenges and find stability in their lives.
