Strong-to-severe thunderstorms are making their way through parts of the Chicago area on Monday evening, posing the risk of gusty winds and hail.
A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for parts of LaSalle County shortly after 7:20 p.m.
The Storm Prediction Center has classified the majority of the Chicago area as having a “marginal” risk for severe weather. This classification is based on the five levels used by the SPC to assess the probability of encountering powerful storms.
The primary concern associated with the development of severe storms will be strong winds, although there is a possibility of hail and lightning.
Showers and thunderstorms formed during the late afternoon, with the main concern for severe weather centered on DeKalb, Kane, LaSalle, Kendall, and Grundy counties. Forecast models indicate that other regions may also experience storms accompanied by strong winds.
Scattered showers and storms may persist on Tuesday, following the departure of the previous storms. However, these are not anticipated to be severe in terms of wind gusts or hail size. High temperatures will remain on the cooler side, with many areas struggling to reach 70 degrees.
The work week will conclude with delightful temperatures and partly-to-mostly sunny skies, signifying the end of any potential rainfall until the weekend.
