A man from California was given a directive by his city to hide the boat parked in his driveway behind a fence. In an act of defiant obedience, he decided to hire his artist neighbor to paint a remarkably lifelike image of the boat.
Etienne Constable mentioned that he had been parking his fishing boat in his Seaside driveway for approximately four years when he received a letter from the city. The letter informed him of a municipal code that mandated boats and trailers to be “screened on the side and front by a six-foot-high fence.”
After reading the letter, Constable felt a surge of anger. However, instead of letting his emotions get the best of him, he decided to have a conversation with his neighbor, Hanif Panni, who is a talented mural artist. Together, they brainstormed and found a creative solution to the problem.
Constable decided to install a fence to block his driveway. In a stroke of artistic brilliance, Hanif Wondir, known for his incredible artwork, painted a breathtakingly realistic image of the boat and the rest of the driveway on the side of the fence facing the road.
“We managed to strike the perfect balance between adhering to the rules and making a bold statement that defies expectations,” Constable revealed in an interview with The Washington Post.
Panni, who referred to the project as an endeavor to craft “an illusion,” shared images of the completed masterpiece on social media platforms, causing them to rapidly gain popularity.
Constable expressed his enthusiasm for sparking a conversation and bringing smiles to people’s faces. In an interview with KSBW-TV, he mentioned, “The response has far exceeded our expectations, and we are both thrilled about it.”
The creative solution implemented by Constable earned him fans, including Nick Borges, Seaside’s acting city manager. Borges was so impressed by the project that he reached out to Constable to express his admiration. Initially, Borges had come across the photos on social media without realizing that they depicted a local home.
Borges expressed his amusement at the creative idea with a laugh, and soon after, he began receiving calls from local media outlets.
According to Borges, the letter that Constable received was a direct consequence of the actions taken last year. He mentioned that the city had been receiving multiple complaints about insufficient code enforcement, which led to the hiring of someone to investigate and reach out to those who were in violation.
According to Borges, Constable’s case was concluded once the fence was installed, and no further action will be taken.
Borges exclaimed, “All I’m going to do is give a high five, nothing more!”
