Authorities have announced that the husband of Ana Knezevich Henao, a Florida woman who disappeared while temporarily residing in Spain, was apprehended by the FBI at Miami International Airport.
David Knezevich, a 36-year-old man from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and originally from Serbia, is presently being held in federal custody for his suspected connection to the kidnapping of his wife, as confirmed by an FBI spokesperson on Monday.
On Saturday, he was taken into custody and now faces charges of kidnapping in relation to Knezevich Henao’s disappearance. Reports had previously indicated that the couple may have been on the brink of divorce, having been married for 13 years.
According to her brother, Knezevich Henao, a 40-year-old naturalized American citizen from Colombia, went missing around February 2. She had planned to meet a friend but did not show up and has not been seen since.
I sent a series of WhatsApp text messages to a friend around the time she allegedly disappeared, informing her that she had met someone. However, this raised suspicions.
“I just met someone amazing! He owns a summer house that’s about 2 hours away from Madrid. We’re heading there now, and I’ll be spending a few days there. The signal is a bit weak, but I’ll give you a call as soon as I get back,” revealed Sanna Rameau, a close friend of Knezevich Henao.
Knezevich had reportedly asked a woman he had met online to write the message on February 3rd “in perfect Colombian.”
Rameau expressed optimism about obtaining answers when he spoke to CNN following the news of Knezevich’s arrest.
Law enforcement has connected Knezevich to his wife’s disappearance on multiple fronts, raising suspicions about his involvement. Furthermore, the couple had substantial assets, putting them at risk of being divided in their ongoing divorce proceedings.
Knezevich flew from Miami International Airport to Turkey on Jan. 27. After arriving in Istanbul, he traveled north to Belgrade and then left his native Serbia on Jan. 30. However, he returned on Feb. 5 after his wife allegedly went missing.
According to officials, the person responsible for vandalizing the security cameras at the entrance and elevator of the luxurious Salamanca apartment building, where Knezevich Henao was residing on the night of her disappearance, is believed to be her estranged husband. The suspect matches the description provided and has also been connected to the purchase of the spray paint cans.
The investigation into the disappearance of Knezevic Henao is currently underway. The suspect, Knezevich, is scheduled to have a pretrial detention hearing on Friday.
“The investigation is still ongoing, with the Spanish National Police, Customs and Border Protection, the Diplomatic Security Service, and the FBI working together,” stated the FBI.
