Pro-abortion-rights group backed by Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker invests in Florida ballot question

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker’s policy advocacy group is investing resources in a Florida ballot initiative aimed at protecting abortion rights in the state constitution. This announcement comes just one day before Florida’s six-week abortion ban is set to take effect.

Think Big America, a not-for-profit organization that has been supporting abortion-rights initiatives nationwide, has recently announced its contribution of $500,000 to the Floridians Protecting Freedom ballot initiative campaign. This generous donation comes after Think Big’s previous donations of $1 million to the ballot campaign in Nevada and $250,000 to Arizona’s ballot campaign. The organization continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting crucial causes across the country.

Vice President Kamala Harris has set her sights on Florida, with plans to visit the state on Wednesday. The purpose of her visit is to shed light on the abortion restrictions that the Biden administration has framed as a lasting impact of Donald Trump’s presidency. This is particularly significant given that three of the Supreme Court justices appointed by Trump were involved in the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

“The administration’s attention towards us has truly energized the Democratic Party,” stated Nikki Fried, Chair of the Florida Democratic Party, during a press conference on Tuesday. She added, “They recognize the importance of standing up for democracy and freedom nationwide, and that’s why they have chosen to confront the challenges head-on right here in the state of Florida.”

The proposed ballot measure in Florida is set to be voted on in November. Its aim is to introduce a state constitutional amendment that would prohibit any limitations on abortion before the point of fetal viability, typically around the 24th week of pregnancy. However, the amendment would still allow for exceptions after this stage in cases where the patient’s health is at risk, as determined by their healthcare provider.

According to Christina Amestoy, a spokeswoman for Think Big, the senior staff members of Think Big America will offer strategic assistance to the Florida abortion rights campaign. This support will involve research, financial aid, and communications support.

Amestoy expressed deep concern about the alarming situation that women in Florida will face starting tomorrow, as they will be deprived of almost all their reproductive rights. The implementation of an extreme six-week abortion ban is not only dangerous but also cruel, contradicting the principles that America stands for. In a statement, Amestoy emphasized the urgency of restoring abortion access in Florida, highlighting that this issue goes beyond the state itself and affects women across the entire region. Think Big America is proud to stand alongside Floridians Protecting Freedom in their unwavering efforts to secure the rights that women rightfully deserve.

California Governor Gavin Newsom recently expressed his support for a new initiative aimed at safeguarding women’s abortion rights. The proposal involves allowing doctors from Arizona to provide abortion services to Arizona residents in California until the end of the year. This move was prompted by a recent Arizona Supreme Court ruling that activated a law from 1864, which almost entirely prohibited abortions. In response to the ruling, the Arizona House has taken steps to repeal the law.
