White House seized on Mitch McConnell’s accusations that Trump slowed action on border security

The White House has highlighted Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s comments, stating that former President Donald Trump was unwilling to accept any bipartisan compromise on strengthening border security laws.

Hours before the Senate passed a comprehensive $95 billion foreign aid package to provide assistance to Ukraine and Israel, McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, expressed his views. This comes after months of internal disagreements within the GOP, which ultimately resulted in no immigration add-ons.

White House spokesperson Andrew Bates explained in an email on Thursday that Senator McConnell attributed the delay in passing the bipartisan border legislation to the fact that “our nominee for president did not seem to want us to do anything at all.”

“After collaborating with both Republicans and Democrats in the Senate, President Biden successfully orchestrated an unprecedented agreement that effectively fortified the border and implemented stricter measures against the fentanyl trade. However, it is disheartening to witness how certain congressional Republicans chose to align themselves with drug cartels and human smugglers, disregarding the concerns of the Border Patrol Union and the Chamber of Commerce, simply because they were influenced by Donald Trump’s directives,” Bates expressed, highlighting the ongoing decline in crime rates across the nation. “President Biden remains resolute in his commitment to safeguarding American communities and will continue to advocate for the most robust and equitable border security arrangement in recent history.”

Amidst the ongoing campaign between President Biden and former President Trump, the White House has taken a direct jab at Trump and Republicans. Trump has consistently emphasized concerns regarding immigration and the asylum system in his appeal to voters, and various surveys indicate that voters widely trust Trump over Biden when it comes to managing border issues.

Biden is attempting to address his vulnerability by asserting that Trump lacks concern for border security and is exploiting the issue solely for political advantage. The latest statement from the White House suggests that Biden’s team intends to persist in emphasizing this argument.

In a statement to reporters on Tuesday, McConnell revealed that Trump’s reluctance to support a bipartisan border deal had played a part in delaying the passage of Ukraine aid.

According to McConnell, the former president had mixed views on the border issue. He acknowledged that everyone believed the border situation was a complete disaster, including himself. McConnell explained that initially, there was an attempt to pass legislation, which required working with Democrats. However, some members of the party felt that the proposed legislation was not sufficient. Additionally, the Republican nominee for president at the time seemed to discourage any action on the matter. McConnell emphasized that it took several months to navigate through these challenges. Eventually, they resorted to passing a supplemental bill that only partially addressed the border problem but aimed to address the immediate threats.

Biden and the Democrats initially dismissed the GOP’s request to incorporate border security into a foreign aid package. However, they eventually relented and reached an agreement with Sen. James Lankford, a Republican appointed by McConnell. Lankford hailed the deal as “the most conservative border security bill in four decades.”

The bill they introduced aimed to make it more difficult to seek asylum, with several conditions to reject new arrivals. However, it did not include the legalization provisions that Democrats had originally requested in any immigration agreement.

Despite pressure from Trump, Republicans were urged to reject the bill. Trump took to social media to express his stance, emphasizing the need for a strong and perfect border. He firmly believed that unless these conditions were met, it would be more beneficial to avoid making a deal.

In a separate post, he expressed his strong opposition to a Border Deal, stating that he believes it should not be pursued unless all necessary measures are taken to prevent the influx of millions of people, including those from unknown origins, into the country.

Despite McConnell’s support for the bipartisan bill, it faced an obstacle in the form of a Republican filibuster. In February, only four GOP senators voted in favor of advancing the bill, while the remaining senators believed it did not meet their expectations.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy from Connecticut, who played a key role in negotiating the border deal, expressed his frustration in an interview, stating, “It’s disappointing that this process took so long. However, as a Democrat, if you consider that we were able to secure the full Ukraine, Israel, and humanitarian aid, while also exposing Republicans on their core issue of immigration, it raises the question of whether this is a worthwhile political deal.”

“We accomplished our goals in Ukraine,” he stated confidently. “Moreover, we made significant strides in addressing the issue we were most concerned about during the election: immigration.”

The Biden administration has been contemplating executive actions to discourage illegal migration since then. However, it is important to note that any steps taken unilaterally would not be as impactful as what Congress can achieve.
