Democrats regain majority in Michigan Statehouse following successful special election campaigns

According to Decision Desk HQ, Peter Herzberg and Mai Xiong, the Democratic candidates, are expected to emerge victorious in the special elections for two Michigan state House races. This outcome will enable the Democratic party to regain complete control of the state Legislature.

Xiong emerged victorious in District 13, defeating Republican Ronald Singer. This district encompasses areas of Detroit, Center Line, and Warren in Macomb and Wayne counties, as reported by the Detroit Free Press.

In District 25, which encompasses portions of Wayne, Canton, and Westland in Wayne County, Herzberg emerged victorious over Republican Josh Powell, as reported by the news outlet.

Xiong, a former refugee from Thailand, brings a wealth of experience to the table, having most recently served on the Macomb County board of commissioners. Meanwhile, Herzberg’s background includes being a dedicated member of the Westland City Council.

Former state Representatives Kevin Coleman (D) and Lori Stone (D) stepped down from their positions after Coleman was elected mayor of Westland and Stone was elected mayor of Warren. This has resulted in a 54-54 split in the House, according to The Associated Press.

Herzberg and Xiong’s victories in the state House elections helped to regain the Democratic majority.

“I am deeply grateful for the incredible support shown by the voters of the 13th House District, who have elected me as their State Representative. Representing our community is an immense honor, and I am humbled by this opportunity. Michigan holds a special significance for me and my family, as it has always been a source of hope and inspiration,” stated Xiong. The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) shared this heartfelt message on behalf of Xiong.

DLCC President Heather Williams praised the win, describing the state as a “shining example” of what can be achieved with a Democratic majority. She highlighted the improvements in healthcare access and efforts to address gun violence as significant accomplishments.

According to her, the elections held tonight served as a referendum on the mission of Michigan’s Democratic trifecta. The voters have clearly expressed their desire for the Democrats to continue leading the state towards progress.

“Tonight’s victories solidify the position of Speaker Joe Tate and the Democratic majority, enabling them to build on the significant progress Democrats have made in Michigan. We have the wind at our backs in Michigan and throughout the nation, and the DLCC is dedicated to ensuring that 2024 becomes the year of the states.”
