A Texas mother has been taken into custody after reportedly abandoning her two young children at home for several days while she went on a cruise, as per court records.
Lakesha Williams, a 29-year-old resident of Houston, is facing charges of felony for abandoning a child with intent to return, according to a criminal complaint.
According to the complaint, neighbors at her high-rise apartment building observed Williams leaving with luggage on April 4 but never witnessed her return.
According to the complaint, the neighbors at the apartment complex expressed concern for the children’s safety and reached out to law enforcement to request a wellness check.
According to the complaint, the children informed the police that their mother had left them on April 4th, stating that she was going on a vacation cruise and they were unaware of when she would be returning.
According to the complaint, it seems that there were no adults supervising the children during that period. The complaint states that Williams allegedly used a video camera to monitor and communicate with the children, while the boy had a phone through which he was texting her.
According to Keegan Childers, the chief prosecutor of the 209th District Court, these children were undoubtedly left unsupervised for several days, exposing them to significant danger. As reported by Houston ABC station KTRK.
According to the complaint, a Child Protective Services agent arrived at the scene to ensure the well-being of the children. Subsequently, the children were entrusted to the care of their aunt.
According to the complaint, deputies attempted to get in touch with Williams so that she could come to the scene and provide her account of the incident. However, she was uncooperative and kept changing her story about where she was at the time.
According to online court records, Williams was taken into custody on Thursday and is expected to make a court appearance on Monday.
