Liam McNeeley, an exceptional high school prospect and one of the top-10 recruits in 2024, has made the decision to commit to UConn, as he revealed to ESPN.
“It was an ideal match,” McNeeley expressed. “Coach Hurley possesses a tough and determined coaching style, which I excel under. The offensive system they employ aligns perfectly with my playing style. The team culture, along with the strategic sets they run, will undoubtedly contribute to my growth on both ends of the court. Moreover, the coaching staff consists of genuinely good individuals.”
McNeeley, a 6-foot-7 wing hailing from Richardson, Texas, made the decision to join the Huskies, choosing them over notable programs such as Arkansas, Kentucky, Alabama, and Michigan. It is worth mentioning that he had initially committed to Indiana; however, he recently sought a release from his commitment.
In an impressive achievement, McNeeley, a highly regarded prospect in the class of 2024 according to ESPN, has been honored as a McDonald’s All American. His contributions to Montverde Academy’s flawless 33-0 season, which culminated in a championship victory at the Chipotle High School Nationals, played a significant role in earning him this prestigious recognition. It is worth noting that he emerged as the third-leading scorer for Montverde this season, showcasing his talent alongside other top-10 recruits Cooper Flagg and Derik Queen.
McNeeley is widely regarded as one of the top perimeter shooters in his class. He possesses a remarkable ability to navigate screens and effortlessly pull up for a shot, showcasing his shooting prowess. This season, he has impressively converted 45% of his 3-point attempts, averaging more than five shots per game. McNeeley’s versatility extends beyond his shooting skills, as he demonstrates an aptitude for attacking the basket and creating opportunities for his teammates on the move. Moreover, he exhibits a fierce competitive spirit on the defensive end. His immense talent and potential were evident in ESPN’s initial 2025 mock draft, where he was projected to be a lottery pick.
“I feel like I really improved over the course of this season,” McNeeley expressed. “The coaching staff at Montverde, especially Coach Kevin Boyle, constantly pushed me to expand my skills beyond just shooting. My teammates had faith in me to step up and make important plays in crucial games. I’m optimistic that I can carry this progress with me as I begin my journey at UConn.”
McNeeley is set to join the UConn team, which is gearing up for another season of rebuilding after achieving the remarkable feat of winning consecutive national championships. This puts them in the elite company of the Florida team that accomplished the same feat in 2006-07.
“I have one primary objective, and that is to secure a national championship,” expressed McNeeley with determination. “UConn has been on an impressive winning streak lately, achieving back-to-back victories. Therefore, there is absolutely no doubt that we have the potential to compete for a remarkable three-peat.”
Cam Spencer and Tristen Newton, both veteran guards and leading scorers, have completed their NCAA eligibility. Meanwhile, Stephon Castle and Donovan Clingan, two underclassmen, are set to embark on their NBA journeys as projected top-10 picks. Additionally, Alex Karaban, the starting power forward, is currently exploring his options in the NBA draft and is projected to be a second-round pick.
McNeeley is joining UConn’s recruiting class, which already includes four-star prospects Ahmad Nowell and Isaiah Abraham. Additionally, the Huskies have recently added Michigan’s Tarris Reed through the transfer portal.
McNeeley expressed his belief that UConn has been successful in winning games without relying on five-star recruits. He acknowledged the team’s ability to develop their players and adapt to different situations. McNeeley is hopeful that this trend will continue in the coming year.
