In a tragic incident, a UPS driver lost his life when he was shot while sitting in his truck at an industrial park in Irvine on Thursday afternoon. The suspected gunman was apprehended following a tense standoff, as confirmed by the authorities.
According to the Irvine Police Department, the incident occurred at around 3 p.m. in the vicinity of Chrysler and Bendix. Multiple shots were reported by several individuals.
The male victim was discovered sitting in the driver’s seat of his truck. Emergency personnel extricated him and made attempts to provide medical assistance, but unfortunately, he was declared deceased at the location. At this time, his identity has not been disclosed.
The motive behind the attack on the UPS driver at the industrial park remains unclear. Law enforcement authorities are unsure if the victim was followed to the location or if the suspect had been waiting there beforehand. According to the police, the UPS driver would often use that location as a spot to take breaks following his delivery rounds. His family, speaking to Eyewitness News, mentioned that he was a dedicated father to two children and had a military background.
The police issued a red channel alert for the suspect’s vehicle, as per their statement.
The authorities discovered the suspect vehicle parked on Santiago Canyon Road, between Jamboree and Irvine Lake, about 20 minutes away from the initial location. A standoff between the police and the suspect followed. Eventually, the suspect was apprehended when a K9 was used to flush him out of the truck.
According to the police, the pickup truck that was captured on surveillance video was the same vehicle that approached the UPS truck, fired shots inside, and then fled the scene.
